My 2020 Bullseye Sports Day Banner [mr thomas email]

My 2020 Bullseye Sports Day Banner

Lau Wei Yiang
The banner was designed with the Sustainable Development Goals in mind when Nobel has not adopted SDG yet. The banner was designed ahead of Sports Day 2020.

In 2019, during Nobelfest, I sold sweet  potato leaf vegetables to people at the Nobelfest, and even Ms June bought one to plant at home. All proceeds were donated to charity. As I like to do gardening activities and upcycling activities using recycled items, the banner was meant to be a symbol of sustainability, continued from the Nobelfest 2019 efforts.

The design looks SO SUSTAINABLE, right? It would have been so striking, doubling up not just as a banner  to cheer for bullseye, but also as a statement for sustainability.
The design was inspired by my gardening projects that I did at the time, as well as now.
Because I like  gardening and tree planting, I took that as an inspiration for my banner.

The 2020 Sports Day's theme was Endangered Animals as unveiled by Mr Narish.

While Bullseye was assigned  the  Ethiopian Wolf as its mascot, I decided to go the extra mile by focusing not just on endangered animals, but also the planet as a whole.

When I was designing the banner, I themed the entire design on environment and sustainability to send a strong signal to the international community and introduce the sustainability concept to Nobel

At the time, Nobel International School wasn't receptive to sustainable practices whilst I had practiced sustainable practices since 2015 and adopted SDG in 2018 upon entering Sunway. So, for 2020, I wanted to use Sports Day 2020 to showcase my sustainability practices.

The Sports Day 2020 banner of mine consisted of a raintree surrounded by a large turf which is being grazed by an Ethiopian Wolf. There are 4 SDGs, namely Life on Land, Life under Water, Sustainable Cities and Communities and Climate Action.

Actually, there was another design which replaced Sustainable Cities with Responsible Consumption and Production

I chose a raintree because it is the main type of tree found in Malaysian cities.
Standalone raintree in Hawaii, USA.
Raintree at the Taiping Lake  Gardens in Perak, Malaysia.
Raintrees along Jalan Syed Putra flanking the Klang River, Kuala Lumpur.
We want to have a link to Malaysia aside from highlighting the Ethiopian Wolf. So, inspired by my gardening activities, I created the banner like that. To inspire SDG activities, we put the SDG symbols related to Sports Day and the Endangered Animals theme by Mr Narish.

We want to fuse our banner with the theme of  Sports Day. We want to make a strong statement of sustainability by leveraging on Mr Narish's theme of Endangered Animals. We want to kill two birds with one stone and make Bullseye not just a strong house, but a sustainable one.

When I told the plan to all the Bullseye members, they were very excited. Every time after class in Sunway, I will go to Nobel every day from January to March 2020 when the school is dismissed, to meet the Bullseye members to discuss plans  for Sports Day without  fail. I will go even though it is raining, being so dedicated.

The activities I did were welcomed by the Bullseye members but were frowned by the management.

Areeya Amali jokingly threatened to tell the other houses my plans and I pleaded, "No! No! No! Please, no!" and they laughed.

They pranked me with this when I told them the interesting plans, which include my banner.

The phrase, "A victory for Bullseye, a sustainable future", showcases the joint effort for the victory of Bullseye and the attainment of the SDG.

As Maker's Fair is coming up in August, I want to share this to talk about the sustainable journey. While all of us, including me, are ahead, Nobel is far behind and has to catch up in time for the year 2030; the  deadline  of the goals which will expire.

I had started work on the banner after my March 2020 semester exams, anticipating the start of Sports Day 2020. However, due to Sports Day being made an internal event just like Founder's Run on 7th March 2020, and the subsequent cancellation of Sports Day 2020 due to Covid 19 on 12th March 2020, we cannot display this.
All the Year 11s were very disappointed and even Chong Vanice cried and  shouted like  mad. They were depressed as they cannot  experience leading Sports Day.
While the banner design was so nice, many  folks raised concerns about the lack of red in the banner, given the excessive focus on environmental themes, and red being the color of Bullseye. To solve  the problem, I put red flowers on the banner.
I was already halfway painting this until the announcement came in that Sports Day 2020 was cancelled.
Sadly, I was unable to display this in 2020. I could have had brought sustainability to Nobel. The banner also continues from Nobelfest 2019 where I sold some veges on the day  and promoted my sustainable gardening practices, my gardening hobby and all my recycling and upcycling activities as a whole.
A lot of people were quite impressed and excited. Even my neighbor, HING FOOK SOON, was so excited!!!!!!
The Sports Day 2020 was to fall on my uncle's birthday, 27th March 2020, and he, too, was impressed at my sustainability efforts for Sports Day and Bullseye.

Today, Nobel is adopting Sustainable Development Goals and thanks to Ms Praveen, it is being implemented across Nobel. I had wanted to implement it, but of course it will need to pass through Ms Praveen's approval. Each class as mentioned before has a SDG poster pasted on the classroom walls.

While the SDG initiative today is commendable, it is crucial to note that we almost displayed the Sustainable Development Goals in Nobel - a goal made possible by Mr Narish, but foiled by the cancellation of Sports Day due to Covid 19. Hence, we want to give this post as a remembrance and to talk about the school's current initiatives. There will be a Maker's Fair to showcase the SDGs later in August, but we want to highlight the forgotten plans for Bullseye to include SDG.

When the Bullseye members were first presented with my idea for my banner, they were all curious, shocked and very excited to go ahead with this initiative. It shows the passion and dedication of Bullseye members at their best.
