In 2022, Nobel International School resumed in-person learning after online learning stints in 2020 and 2021. Many of the sports events were cancelled due to the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. Starting from March 2022, as Covid 19 restrictions were relaxed, Nobel International School begun to resume in-person sports activities for the benefit of new and existing students. The events consisted of the 2022 Founder's Run, 2022 Telematch Competition and 2022 Nobel Cup.
For the year 2022, the management had not decided to hold Sports Day as it was a mass event and it was uncertain over how the pandemic situation would abate. Therefore, Ms Bee Yong and Mr Nigel had remarked that for 2022, the sports landscape would focus on low-scale games and activities.
The overall score for the year 2022 was won by Bullseye, clinching the 2022 Founder's Run, 2022 Nobel Cup and the overall score. This is the first time since the year 2015 where a sports house has won all the sports competitions held in a single calendar year. It is also the first Bullseye victory of Nobel Cup since 2018, the fourth Bullseye victory year out of five victory years, and the third of four calendar years where a sports house won all the tournaments. This is the first of Bullseye's clean sweep involving the Founder's Run; Bullseye had never won all events in a single calendar year that involve the Founder's Run; the 2014 and 2015 Sports Day and Nobel Cup victories took place when the Founder's Run was not established.
Background
Bullseye, a sports house in Nobel International School, managed to win the 2014, 2015, 2016 Sports Days and 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018 Nobel Cups, while losing the 2016 Nobel Cup, 2017 Sports Day and 2018 Sports Day; the 2017 Sports Day had a one-point gap between Bullseye and Touchdown, with a tie-up of 648-649. Following this loss, Wei Yiang led an expedition to reclaim the trophy for Bullseye as an alumni, which led to the 2017 Nobel Cup, 2018 Founder's Run, 2018 Nobel Cup and 2019 Sports Day victory.
After winning the 2019 Sports Day, Bullseye attempted to win the 2019 Nobel Cup, but lost to Slamdunk, resulting in the first ever victory of Slamdunk in any sports event. However, the victory of Slamdunk was short-lived, as Bullseye managed to overthrow the lead of Slamdunk during the 2020 Founder's Run, resulting in a Bullseye lead and averting the disaster of 2017. The completion of some pre Sports Events in early March 2020 resulted in a significant lead for Bullseye before the cancellation of Sports Day due to the Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent movement control order (MCO) lockdown.
Upon the resumption of in-person learning in June and July 2020, the management initially banned future sports activities, such as the 2020 Nobel Cup, which was scheduled for 10th November 2020, as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. However, as the pandemic situation in Malaysia improved, the management considered lifting certain restrictions and allowing some resumption of sports activities according to the Ministry of Health's Covid 19 standard operating procedures (SOP). The Academic Year 2020 was subsequently extended from the original end date of 13th November 2020, to end on 4th December 2020, to make up for lost time during the MCO.
The Covid 19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of all activities and abandonment of all projects, including the Sports Day banner and 2020 Yearbook.
2021 House Captain Election
On Monday, 10th August 2020, Mr Narish announced that the 2021 House Captain Election would be held on Friday, 14th August 2020, to elect the next house captain for the year 2021. Mr Narish also said that the school was considering restoring the 2020 Nobel Cup should the pandemic situation improve. At the time, Malaysia was recording single digit cases daily in relations to Covid 19. The Nobel Cup 2020 was scheduled for Tuesday, 10th November 2020. The aim of electing the 2021 house captain was to boost morale for the students during the time of great hardship.
Mr Narish announced a roadmap to the Nobel Cup 2020, and that a further amount of confirmation would be announced in October 2020, at least a month before the Nobel Cup and after the conclusion of the Final Year Examination. The Nobel Cup would be held in a setting with strict SOPs to combat Covid 19, such as the wearing of face masks, sanitizing of hands, and social distancing. The Nobel Cup will be played in Nobel International School to minimize contact with members of the public due to Covid 19. To ensure that the Covid 19 situation was to be handled properly, Mr Narish added that the school was considering holding Nobel Cup on two separate days; 9th and 10th November, with a further extension if needed.
The candidates for the 2021 House Captain Election were Ainsley Wong, Amelia Colin, Edward Chang and Chuah Jian Chung. However, no official result was released, although it is believed that Ainsley Wong got the most votes. The house meets were held via Zoom, and were tasked with electing the next captain. The original plan was for the House Captain of Bullseye to be revealed in September 2020, following the school holidays.
Nobel Cup 2020
In September 2020, a spike in Covid 19 cases occurred in Sabah in conjunction with the state's snap election on 26th September 2020. This resulted in the closure of schools in Selangor on 12th October 2020, due to the rise in Covid 19 cases in Selangor as a result of returnees from Sabah following the election. Subsequently, Mr Narish left Nobel International School on 30th September 2020 as he was relocating to Sri KDU International School Klang to teach.
The closure of schools in October 2020 resulted in online learning for the rest of 2020, and subsequently, Nobel Cup was cancelled. This resulted in Slamdunk, the 2019 champion, getting their walkover year, just like how Bullseye did in the 2020 Sports Day.
Founder's Run and Athletics Day 2021
On Wednesday, 20th January 2021, Nobel International School resumed the academic year for 2021. The Founder's Run was scheduled for 7th to 21st April 2021, with an Athletics Day on 14th April 2021. The Athletics Day was intended to replace the Sports Day due to Covid 19. A calendar was presented for the year 2021, showing the school events planned on a normal year in lieu of restrictions imposed to combat Covid 19, consisting of field trips, celebrations and festivals.
On 8th March 2021, Nobel International School resumed in-person learning. On Monday, 29th March 2021, the information in regards to Founder's Run was announced by Mr Marcus, who was heading the Sports and Recreation Department. Mr Marcus announced that the Founder's Run for 2021 will be a Virtual Run and the Biib application would be used to record the distance run. Management members participated in the run and posted pictures of them running on the school's Facebook page. The Virtual Run was held from 7th to 21st April 2021. Students received their 2021 Sports Attire on 19th March 2021. The run was also the first run to incorporate both the Elementary and Junior and Senior School in one event.
Nobel Cup 2021
The 2021 Nobel Cup was planned to take place on 30th November and 1st December 2021, but was cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic. This resulted in Slamdunk getting their second walkover year.
2022 as the achievement of the four year streak
The four year victory plan was first proposed in November 2014 by Lau Wei Yiang, when planning the 2014 Nobel Cup and 2015 Sports Day strategy for Bullseye. It was revived once again in November 2015 by Jason Leing, when the 2015 Nobel Cup victory was being planned by Lau Wei Yiang and Caleb Chuang as part of Operation Speedrunner. At the time, the Bullseye members had planned to win a total of four victory years; 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The plan was drafted alongside a plan to win the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Nobel Cups. However, in 2016 and 2017, Bullseye lost the Nobel Cup 2016 and Sports Day 2017, and as such, the four year victory plan cannot be fulfilled. It took two attempts before the 2019 Sports Day victory was confirmed as Bullseye's fourth victory year, but a victory streak did not happen because 2017 and 2018 were won by Touchdown. Nevertheless, Bullseye members managed to replace the 2016 Nobel Cup loss with the 2017 Nobel Cup victory.
After the 2019 Sports Day victory, assisted by the Covid 19 pandemic and prior performance in 2019 and 2020, Bullseye managed to win three victory years in 2021, matching the 2016 Sports Day victory which was the previous time a three-year victory streak was fulfilled. The significance of retaining the trophy in 2021 proved a landmark move, and thus, in 2022, Bullseye was on the verge of a 2022 championship victory.
Overview and challenges for 2022
Because the 2022 victory year is so important for Bullseye, various measures were taken in order to safeguard the victory of Bullseye and carry the victory on from the 2019 Sports Day. This is because of the high stakes situation needed for the Bullseye victory to be preserved. As so much time and effort has been spent since 2017 to even win the 2019 Sports Day, the direction taken to the current situation by the pandemic had extended the one Bullseye victory year in 2019 into three. Since two additional years to the 2019 Bullseye Sports Day Victory had been provisionally occupied by Bullseye; one unofficial in terms of the scores received in the Sports Day 2020 statistics, in which Sports Day had been cancelled due to Covid 19; and another, 2021, in which there was a provisional victory due to Bullseye's custody of the 2019 trophy, a sports event in 2022 would be needed to confirm the 2019, 2020 and 2021 victory years, and with a victory in 2022, the Sports Day victory streak of four years, which had been conceptualized eight years before in November 2014 would be achieved. A loss in 2022 would see Bullseye win only one year, 2019, with 2020 and 2021 disregarded should Bullseye fail to win any event in 2022. Since so much time had been spent since 2017 to win the 2019 Sports Day, the convenient move would be to win the year 2022 to finally confirm the four year victory plan of Bullseye.
Concerns over de-training
Since the 2019 Sports Day, three batches of students had graduated from Nobel International School; many of which contained top notch athletes from Bullseye such as Areeya Amali, Elissa Carmen, Ainsley Wong, Amelia Colin, Joshua Gurusamy, Enya Chok and Nicholas Liang, there was great concern that with the Covid 19 pandemic and the cancellation of many sports events, hardware and software skills needed for Bullseye to win the Sports Day cannot be passed on from generation to generation due to the shortcoming faced by the Covid 19 pandemic in terms of the lack of the opportunity to practice and hone those skills.
Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic, each Year 11 graduating batch, each house committee, and each generation of students year upon year, will pass down skills and stories from one generation to another. At the height of Bullseye's 2017 Sports Day loss, the outgoing batches were able to pass down the stories of Bullseye's previous victory streak in order to inspire the next generation of Bullseye members. However, after Bullseye's 2019 Sports Day victory, the Sports Day was the final Sports Day for three consecutive graduating batches. Hence, a large section of students graduating in 2021 and before were unable to present their skills and also the history of Bullseye to a total of three new incoming batches of students that replaced them.
Concerns arose over the possibility of Bullseye being unable to win the 2022 overall scores because of the impact faced by the Covid 19 pandemic, rending error and obstacles in conveying the success stories of Bullseye as well as the athletics training of the previous Bullseye members that graduated. Hence, there was fear that the Bullseye members in 2022 would be incapable of executing and attaining the 2022 victory.
2022 House Captain Election
The 2022 House Captain Election took place on Monday, 14th March 2022. The house captain election was conducted via Zoom for the second consecutive time; the previous occasion being in 2020 to elect the 2021 House Captain.
The current Bullseye members were mainly clueless on what to expect as to how sports events will progress in 2022. Fortunately, the teachers were there to guide the students the next moves.
Adam Luca Marchione was elected as the House Captain of Bullseye. Adam is the first non-Malaysian to hold the post of House Captain of Bullseye, and the first Caucasian to do so.
In his opening speech, Adam promised to make Bullseye win as the house captain.
2022 Founder's Run
School resumed on Wednesday, 19th January 2022. All online learning ended on Friday, 1st April 2022, and physical learning resumed on Monday, 4th April 2022.
On Monday, 21st March 2022, Nobel International School launched the 2022 Founder's Run. Due to the pandemic, the run was held virtually, from 21st March 2022 to 14th April 2022. Bullseye had the most registrations for the Founder's Run, thus resulting in a Founder's Run victory for Bullseye.
The 2022 Founder's Run was the first to have a Students' Committee, comprising Jonathan Yong Yuen Khai, Irina Rochelle Dason, Hang Cayman, Caitlyn Wong Yi Xin, Goh Jin Yu, Shum Xin Tung, Nicole Ding and Tristan Lim Chun Ming.
The run and sports events were coordinated by Mr Nigel Rhode, Mr Marcus and Mr Lew Wei Him, who joined Nobel that year. Mr Lew Wei Him was appointed Head of CCA after Mr Nigel Rhode was promoted to Deputy Principal.
Telematch Day 2022
On 9th May 2022, Mr Marcus announced that the school will hold a Telematch event from 20th to 24th June 2022. Aside from that, Mr Marcus also announced that there will be an overall score ranking of all the houses from March 2022, the Founder's Run, until the end of the year. The champion house would be the winner of all the accumulated scores, and it will comprise the Founder's Run, Nobel Cup and the Telematch Competition. The significance of this competition was that it would not just be the first sports event to take place following the Covid 19 pandemic; but it would also be a revived chance to resurrect the four-year victory plan which was foiled by Touchdown in 2017.
Prior to 2022, the last Sports Day took place on 22nd March 2019, and no major sports event had been held since then. With graduates from 2020 and 2021 missing out on sports activities due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the management aimed to provide a platform for Year 11 graduates in 2022 to have fun before graduating from Nobel.
According to Mr Marcus, the competition will begin from the points accumulated from the registration of Founder's Run, and tally up with the Telematch and Nobel Cup to get the final score.
Telematch Competition
The telematch competition was held in Nobel International School during the PE lesson from 21st to 24th June. Each year level was given two different games per year level, and the telematch games can be any game from hula hooping to bean bag throwing. The winner of the telematch was Homerun, followed by Slamdunk, Bullseye and Touchdown.
Nobel Cup 2022
The 2022 Nobel Cup is the eighth edition of the Nobel Cup, and it was played in two separate batches to account for the Covid 19 pandemic. The plan was announced by Mr Marcus during the Telematch announcements on 9th May 2022 as part of the relaxation of school SOPs related to Covid 19 to account for the sports events to take place. Students had until 31st May 2022 to register for the Nobel Cup games, and practices took place during the school holidays.
2022 KS4 Nobel Cup
The 2022 KS4 Nobel Cup was held on 15th July 2022 at Sports Garage, Petaling Jaya. The KS4 Nobel Cup was won by Homerun. This tournament was created in order to give the Year 11s a final moment to play the Nobel Cup games and is a replacement event for the cancelled 2022 Sports Day. The games contested during the 2022 KS4 Nobel Cup were basketball, captain ball and futsal.
The 2022 KS4 Nobel Cup also involved a match of captain ball between students and teachers. The event was won by the students.
2022 KS3 Nobel Cup
The 2022 KS3 Nobel Cup was held on 22nd November 2022 at Forum 19 for the Futsal, Badminton and Table Tennis events. The Chess event and Captain Ball events were held at Nobel International School, and the Basketball event took place at Summit USJ's Hoops Station in Subang Jaya. The winner of this event was Bullseye.
Wei Yiang's escortion controversy
During the 2022 KS3 Nobel Cup on 22nd November 2022, Wei Yiang was told to leave by Ms Bee Yong from the Nobel Cup after one hour. Critics lashed the management for having no face to face a Bullseye lead and that "they were afraid of Bullseye".
Announcement of results
The announcement of the 2022 Nobel Cup results was postponed; it was confirmed on 21st April 2023 by Teh Szi Wei that the winner of the Nobel Cup 2022 and overall score for 2022 was Bullseye. The overall score ranking for 2022 was Bullseye, followed by Homerun, Slamdunk and Touchdown.
The victory of Bullseye achieved in principle, the four year victory streak, but however, the actual victory will need to be confirmed in the Sports Day. This 2022 victory was officially confirmed by the victory of Bullseye on 20th November 2023, aside from confirming the 2020 and 2021 victories.
Wei Yiang's 2021 and 2022 Bullseye Banner
2021 Sports Day Banner
The 2021 Sports Day banner was designed to commemorate three years of Bullseye's second victory streak, matching the very first victory streak from 2014 to 2016. The 2021 banner consisted of the words "BULLSEYE", with the letters LS being darkened, to indicate the losing years of Bullseye alongside the victory years. Each letter is inscribed with a year at the bottom from 2014 to 2021.
The 2021 Sports Day banner also symbolizes meaning with each letter. The letter B was meant to commemorate Brian Ong, the first house captain to preside over the first victory, U to represent Caleb Chuang, L to represent Lau Wei Yiang, S to represent Sean Mark, E to represent extraordinary years in world events, and Y to represent the spike protein of Covid 19 to recognize the year 2020 as a year of sacrifice and adversity.
When viewed from afar, the dark and light tones of the word BULLSEYE aim to symbolize the Bullseye symbol.
2022 Sports Day Banner
The 2022 Sports Day banner focuses on recognizing the fight of frontliners against the Covid 19 virus. The 2022 banner depicts a health worker in personal protective equipment suit holding a syringe and aiming at the numerals 2022. The number 0 is shaped like the Covid 19 virus and darkened to symbolize the sacrifice done by the world to Covid 19, likening to the parody of the phrase "Bullseye" by replacing the dart, bow and arrow with a syringe held in a bow to symbolize the vaccine, and aimed to the Covid 19 virus to symbolize the fight against Covid 19. The numerals 2022 each represent one year of the Bullseye victory streak starting from 2019; the year the virus was first discovered, the declaration of the pandemic in 2020, and the recovery from the virus in 2021 and 2022. The word 2022 is also a spin off from the Bullseye wording in the 2021 banner. The Bullseye wording, likewise, from 2021, is placed at the bottom of the banner, with the words, "Soaring Together, Connected" to recall the previous time in 2017 where a four year victory was almost successfully achieved.
Bullseye Plans developed during the Movement Control Order
As part of the preparations for a future Sports Day or a future Sports event, predictions and simulations had been done during the 2021 National Recovery Plan implemented as part of MCO 3.0. There was a parody Olympic and Paralympic logo done for Bullseye, as well as a Bullseye Covid 19 vaccine named "Dartshot".
Virtual Sports Day simulation
During the Movement Control Order in August 2021, a plan was hitched, simulating a possible Sports Day televised from the comforts of one's home. Viewers would watch the marchpast and dance competitions from home, along with the athletic events, and the Zoom platform would be used to enable the cheering of the athletes on Sports Day in an empty stadium setting.
