2018 Nobel Cup

The 2018 Nobel Cup was the  sixth edition of the Nobel Cup. It was held on 13th November 2018 at the iM4U Sentral in Puchong, and is the third of four Nobel Cups to do so, since the 2016 Nobel Cup. The tournament was won by Bullseye. This is also Bullseye's fourth Nobel Cup  victory and  it will  be Bullseye's final Nobel Cup victory before the Covid 19 pandemic. The next Bullseye  Nobel Cup victory will take place in 2022.

Background

Bullseye had lost the Sports Day 2017 and 2018 after winning three consecutive Sports Days from 2014 to  2016. In the course of this timeframe, Bullseye had won every Nobel Cup from 2014 to 2017, with the exclusion of the 2016 Nobel Cup. The landmark 2017 loss by a single point to Touchdown was a key turning point in the fight for Bullseye's continued success.

After losing the Sports Day, Bullseye members want to revive a fourth victory year, fuelled by the new format of Sports Day and Nobel Cup being put together. In the process, Bullseye managed to gain the champion house victory of the Founder's Run.

The loss of Bullseye comes on further fuelled criticism  and speculation that the management team is interfering with the results, and that the management team appeared to openly support Touchdown due to Bullseye's association with Wei Yiang and his intent to make Bullseye win as an alumni. The management, according to critics, had used many methods, such as open endorsement of other houses, tightening the security policy, and barring Wei Yiang's banners from the Sports Day.

Planning

The 2018 Sports Day loss led to a blow for Wei Yiang in his plan to make Bullseye win. Morale was dropping among the planners of Operation Speedrunner, and Wei Yiang was told that nothing can be done as an alumni. However, Wei  Yiang decided to press ahead, knowing that giving up is not the answer to the solution. Wei Yiang tried to convince his friends on the plans, but most of his 2017 batch-mates were more interested in their univeirsity studies than the Sports Day.

The challenge to  the Sports Day in 2018 initially proved the strength and control of  the Management Team, with the  inability of Wei Yiang to penetrate security policies and school framework. This brought grave concern to the team as  the proposals cannot be presented to  the  Bullseye members effectively. Unlike the situation now, the situation during Wei Yiang's Nobel era was different, as being a student himself, he had all Bullseye members within reach.

On the other hand, growing discontent had been building up among the Bullseye members over what had happened. Seeing a double loss in Sports Day, the Bullseye members decided to make up for loss time; they knew that winning the 2018 Nobel Cup was essential. The Bullseye members distaste the management's actions towards Wei Yiang and knew that something would need to be done.

Significance of the 2018 Nobel Cup

Had Bullseye won the 2016 Nobel Cup, 2017 Sports Day, 2017 Nobel Cup and 2018 Sports Day, the 2018 Nobel Cup would not be a review on Wei Yiang's drawing board and would not even be a plan on the Operation Speedrunner blueprint. However, given the circumstances of Bullseye in the 2017 and 2018 Sports Day, the Nobel Cup, once seen as an isolated event by the Student Council planners in 2013, is now an essential tool to the victory of Bullseye. Therefore, the focus of the 2018 Nobel Cup was inclined on the victory of Sports Day in 2019. This is no surprise since the 2016 Nobel Cup when Nobel Cup was first combined with the official Sports Day tally.

Collaboration with Melvyn Lim

Melvyn Lim Teck Wan was a student in Nobel International School from 2014 to 2018. He was an admirer of Wei Yiang's Operation Speedrunner victory plans for Bullseye. Therefore, Wei Yiang decided to collaborate with Melvyn for the 2019 Sports Day victory. Wei Yiang would show a series of plans to Melvyn who would get excited over the plans. Melvyn was taking the Art and Design IGCSE at the time of the planning for the 2019 Sports Day, which begun in June 2018.

Collaboration with Kanesh Rudra

Kanesh A/L Rudra Kumar was a student of Nobel International School from 2007 to 2012, mainly studying in the school's private school wing. The school's private national school wing was eventually abolished in 2014; Kanesh was part of the 2012 graduating cohort from the primary school of that private school.

Kanesh and Wei Yiang met  during classes at  Sunway College as the duo were in the same class. The duo begun planning and strategizing for the Bullseye wing, joining another ex-Nobelian, Erik Goh Jiahui, to plan the strategies.

Criticism by Mr Aram S. Katz

On 29th August 2019, Mr Aram S. Katz, the former head of History of Nobel International School, blamed Wei Yiang for taking too much power in the Bullseye projects. Mr Aram previously set the History coursework which inspired Wei Yiang's banners; he had left Nobel in August 2018.

Mr Aram referenced the fact that he would treat Wei Yiang different than other alumni in a Facebook post that he had written. He had said that Wei Yiang was an "arrogant, aloof and classic narcissist" who wanted to control the Bullseye narrative; and that he would want full control of Bullseye and everything to be done his way. Mr Aram claimed that Wei Yiang would "climb to the top, leaving a trail of destruction in despair".

The post was criticized by many students from Nobel International School, and Mr Aram was also criticized by Mr Gallagher, Cikgu Izyani and Ms June, who hit out at Mr Aram for "talking rubbish." Mr Gallagher also criticized those students who condoned Mr Aram's remark. The Bullseye members further criticized Mr Aram's remark.

Withdrawal of Caleb Chuang from the Bullseye victory projects and Operation Speedrunner

Caleb Chuang, who was persuing his A Levels at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur,  told Wei Yiang he had no intention to participate in the Bullseye planning despite him attending the Sports Day  many times. Caleb Chuang told Wei Yiang that he wasn't a student anymore and felt that there wasn't any obligation to participate in the events.

This left Wei Yiang to carry the plans alone, and he enlisted Melvyn  Lim to discuss the plans. The plans went  through refinement and planning in order to ensure the victory of the 2019 Sports Day.

2019 House Captain Election

The 2019 House Captain Election took place  on Monday,  20th August  2018. Chia Zheng was elected as the house captain, succeeding Koo Shi Tian.

The sentiment at the  House Captain Election was met with the despair  of Bullseye losing two Sports Days despite the victory of the  2017 Nobel Cup. The Bullseye members' concerns was that if Bullseye continued to lose the Sports Day, it will be the end of Bullseye's dominance in the landscape of Nobel International School.

For the 2019 House Captain Election, Mr Narish unveiled a new framework for the election of the House Captain of Bullseye. The electoral process would require the election of a female house captain for each house aside from the election of the house captain and the assistant captain. There were seven house captain candidates vying for the election; Ashwin Jeyabalan, Chia Zheng, Nicholas Liang, Andrew Loke, Tan Ying She, Alyssa Kok and Enya Chok. The Bullseye members were told to choose a house captain that guaranteed the victory of Bullseye in  2019.

Nobel Cup preparations

The Nobel Cup preparations begun in August 2018. The preparations had to be consistent with the preparations for the upcoming Nobelfest in 2018.

The preparations for Nobel Cup begun with the tryouts process on Friday, 7th September 2018, after school, to select the players for the 2018 Nobel Cup.

Nobel Cup 2018

Competition

The Nobel Cup took place at the iM4U Sentral stadium in Puchong on 13th November 2018, while the Netball and Table Tennis competitions were held at Nobel International School.

The Nobel Cup at iM4U Sentral begun with the arrival of students from Nobel International School at 8:45am. The students soon arrived in different busses; one bus per house. When the Bullseye members reached iM4U Sentral, all the Bullseye athletes cheered loudly upon seeing Wei Yiang at the stadium.

The students were told to settle down for a briefing of the rules and regulations by Mr Narish. When Mr Narish finished explaining the rules and regulations, Wei Yiang cheered, "Come on Bullseye, come let's go!" to a thunderous round of applause from the Bullseye members. This was widely credited for Bullseye's Nobel Cup and eventual Sports Day victory.

The Bullseye v. Touchdown match was the first match of the day, followed by Homerun v. Slamdunk, Bullseye v. Homerun, Touchdown v. Slamdunk, Bullseye v. Slamdunk and Touchdown v. Homerun.

Champion House Announcement

On Friday, 16th November 2018, Mr Narish handed out the awards for the Nobel Cup. The winner of the futsal tournament was Bullseye, the netball tournament  Bullseye, the basketball tournament Bullseye and the chess competition Touchdown. Ms Chia Bee Yong, the principal of Nobel International School, was invited to present the trophies to the winners.

When the final scores were revealed, Bullseye was tied with Touchdown at 275 points each, with Homerun at 280 points and Slamdunk at 270 points. However, at 11:00am, Ms Bee Yong called all the house captains to the office in which she announced that Bullseye got 290 points, Touchdown 285, Homerun 280 and Slamdunk 270. Mr Gallagher had presented a third version earlier which saw Homerun at 285, Bullseye and Slamdunk at 270 points, and Touchdown at 260 points. The one by Ms Bee Yong was deemed to be the final score after the management admitted mistakes in the calculation of the badminton scores.

The result was cheered on by Wei Yiang and Melvyn, but was booed and jeered by the Homerun members. Had Homerun won, this would be Homerun's second Nobel Cup victory after 2013, and it will foil Bullseye's fourth Nobel Cup victory attempt. The victory of Bullseye resulted in Bullseye scoring a second consecutive Nobel Cup victory, and the first Nobel Cup back to back win since 2015.

Goal of Nobel Cup

The goal of Bullseye for the Nobel Cup is to defend the Nobel Cup title for the purposes of winning Sports Day 2019.
