The 2014 Nobel Cup was the second edition of the Nobel Cup, after the 2013 Nobel Cup. This Nobel Cup was won by Bullseye, barely seven months after the 2014 Sports Day victory. The tournament was held at the Lee Chong Wei Sports Arena in Jalan Klang Lama and the SS5 Basketball Courts. The netball tournament was held in Nobel International School, and the Nobel Cup was held on 11 and 12th November 2014.
The victory of Bullseye in Nobel Cup 2014 resulted in Bullseye winning all the tournament championship titles in Nobel International School for the first time in history. It will be the first of four academic years, the other being 2015, 2022 and 2023, in which Bullseye accomplished such a feat.
The 2014 Nobel Cup was originally planned for October 2013; it was moved to November in lieu of the Final Year Examination.
Operation Speedrunner
In October 2014, Ms Visa, the history teacher of Year 8O, was absent, resulting in multiple relief lessons. At the same time, the absence of multiple teachers resulted in multiple relief lessons. Thus, the relief lessons were used as an opportunity for a discussion which changed the course of Bullseye's history.
Planning had already begun in late September 2014, following the conclusion of the Carnaval do Nobel on 30th August. The Nobel Cup was on the horizon, and a plan was needed that would change history.
Caleb Chuang was the son of Mr Chuang Peck Guan, the head of Character Transformation in Nobel. He was also the class monitor of 8O. On the other hand, Lau Wei Yiang was a student of 8O. The duo had met in January 2014 when they were in 8O, although they were in the same batch since 2008. Wei Yiang himself had done many big projects before, be it involving gardening, or in the case of Nobel, the Geography weather device. He had planned something similar for the Science Fair involving a large billboard, and had been telling Caleb Chuang so he can handle logistics as class monitor. It was during one of the conversations of the Science Fair that the topic of Bullseye was brought up.
Both Wei Yiang and Caleb are in Bullseye, and as such, the plan would be very interesting for them to work together. During a History lesson where Ms Visa was absent, Wei Yiang brought up the idea of Bullseye winning Nobel Cup. Being a fan of record breaking feats, he said that no one in Nobel had won both Sports Day and Nobel Cup before, the only two events at the time, and he suggested for Bullseye to win both. Caleb said it was a good idea if Bullseye can win it as well, although champion sports houses keep on changing from time to time and that Nobel Cup was different than Sports Day.
For Wei Yiang, he opined that in order for Bullseye to be famous, the team needs to win, as the champion house of either Sports Day or Nobel Cup would normally get the school's attention. Having a Nobel Cup victory in addition to the Sports Day would bolster the standing of Bullseye, in addition to "2014 being a great year to enjoy things before Checkpoint".
Skeptics immediately weighed in on the idea. Jason Leing, then a new student to Nobel, also from Bullseye, immediately supported the project. He did not know what was the importance of Bullseye as he entered Nobel in August 2014 and did not have any knowledge on Sports Day. His best friend, Sean Mark, who is a 100m sprinter, also said it was not a good plan as it was created by Wei Yiang himself, and that his plans were too dominant and dominate the whole house. Jason Leing approved the plans and approved it for the go-ahead.
Caleb Chuang and Lau Wei Yiang proposed that the plans be discussed with all the Bullseye members within 8O first, before heading over to the other classes. When consulting with Jordan Tay, Renee Koh, Ivyna Ong and Chia Yan Ying, many of them were unsure of the performance of Bullseye. Overall, the response was quite good regarding the plans, however many of those interviewed within 8O were skeptical of its success; of a successful run of one house winning both tournaments, since no single house was unable to win both Sports Day and Nobel Cup thus far.
The same situation lingered over the other classes when the plans were presented. Many of the Year 8 Bullseye members opined that Bullseye cannot win Nobel Cup 2014. They felt it was unsuitable and a tough hurdle to manage considering the fact that Bullseye had only won Sports Day a few months back.
Wei Yiang then proposed to Caleb Chuang that the only way to get people involved in Nobel Cup was to propose ideas that can allow for a victory in the Nobel Cup. Caleb Chuang agreed, and Wei Yiang proposed watching basketball or badminton tournaments during break, lunch and after school to study the moves. From there, this moves would be studied to identify potential strategies for Bullseye to ace the Nobel Cup. Wei Yiang thus observed people playing basketball and badminton during break time as well as during PE, and consulted with valuable players, such as Ivyna, Caleb Chuang himself, and a few others who had played the respective sports during Nobel Cup so as to identify, discuss and plan strategies for the tournament, including nutritional food and drinks. The plans were then presented to Caleb Chuang, who approved of it. Following Caleb Chuang's approval, the plans were presented to Bullseye members who played various sports that will be contested in the Nobel Cup, and all of them appreciated the strategy.
The name of the strategy was codenamed 'Operation Speedrunner', after Branson Choon's video game, Speedrunner. The name was formally chosen in 2015 as the plan was to rival Branson Choon from Homerun, who was also in their class in 2015 and 2014.
Candidate identification for the 2014 House Captain Election
On 13th October 2014, the House Captain Election took place. Prior to the election, Wei Yiang and Caleb Chuang discussed the strategies for the Nobel Cup. Wei Yiang proposed that a strict and serious captain be elected, and have the same charisma as Brian Ong and Emily Liew. Caleb Chuang and all the people in Year 8 agreed. Wei Yiang proposed that everyone study the house captain candidates' speeches to choose the candidates properly. Everyone elected Lim Wei Ming to be elected captain. Prior to the election, everyone had agreed for Wei Ming to be elected as captain due to his strict, serious and enthusiastic charisma.
Selection of players for Nobel Cup
After the end of the Final Year Examination, the selection of players begun for Nobel Cup. Wei Yiang met with Caleb Chuang and proposed suitable people to play in the Nobel Cup. He first named Caleb Chuang himself for the futsal tournament. Caleb Chuang agreed. Ivyna, Yan Ying and Eu Lynn were proposed as netball players due to their involvement in the netball CCA, and Ting Yi and Kit Lee as badminton players.
The plan was to have each player head to their respective tournaments with the strategies formulated by Lau Wei Yiang and Caleb Chuang. Each player from Bullseye will tackle the other houses, and relay the progress of the game to the duo. The strategies presented by Wei Yiang and Caleb were approved by Wei Ming and all the other Bullseye members; the only thing left was to execute them. According to Wei Yiang, he envisioned a Bullseye victory in all the tournaments.
Nobel Cup tournaments
The Nobel Cup was played at the Lee Chong Wei Sports Arena at Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur, on 11th November 2014. Busses were chartered to bring the players from Nobel International School to the sports centre. Each house was accompanied by their house captain and assistant house captain, along with the captains coaching the various sports.
The Nobel Cup 2014's first day involved students playing badminton and futsal. Bullseye managed to do well in badminton, but it was a stalemate during the futsal game. However, Aristotle Koh was hanging on the goalposts at the futsal court, resulting in 50 points being deducted from Homerun. Wei Yiang cheekily suggested to Caleb Chuang that the points be awarded to Bullseye instead for being the best prepared house when gathering for the return to Nobel.
While on the journey back to Nobel, Wei Yiang and Caleb Chuang formulated and sharpened the plans, decoding what will happen if Bullseye won or lost. Should Bullseye win the Nobel Cup 2014, the plans will be re-introduced for a Sports Day 2015 victory. Wei Yiang had hinted to Caleb Chuang that it would look cool for Bullseye to win the Sports Day 2015.
Caleb Chuang initially, according to Wei Yiang, shrugged and said, "Didn't we win Sports Day this year?" to which Wei Yiang replied, "Yes, I know we have won Sports Day this year, but if we win next year's Sports Day, we will win two Sports Days and it would be great!" he cried.
Wei Yiang was having a grand plan to win every single Sports Day until his graduation in 2017, as 2017 would be his IGCSE examination. He had kept this in mind, but had not stated it out yet for fear of repercussions. He had this plan all along, but he did not want to let the Bullseye members know about it as it would be crazy.
On the second day of the tournament, the Netball match was played in Nobel International School while the basketball games were held at the SS5 basketball courts, and Mr Paul Lau was involved in driving the students from Nobel International School to the court. Ryan Chan was involved in the basketball tournament, and Wei Ming was refereeing the basketball match while Deanna Lee was involved in the netball tournament.
Mr Paul announced Bullseye as the overall champion house winner on the last day of school in 2014, 14th November. The winner of the badminton match was Touchdown, the futsal and netball match Bullseye and the basketball match Slamdunk. The results were a joy for Wei Yiang and Caleb Chuang as they celebrated during the class party.
Goal for Nobel Cup 2014
