The 2019 Sports Day, the 15th edition of Nobel International School's Sports Day, took place on 22nd March 2019. It was held at Panasonic Stadium, Shah Alam. The Sports Day was won by Bullseye in a major comeback since the loss of 2017. It was Bullseye's fourth ever Sports Day victory, the first victory since 2016, and the replacement Sports Day victory for the year 2017's loss. It is the first Sports Day victory since the 2017 Sports Day loss.
The success of Bullseye on 22nd March 2019 saw Touchdown, the defending champion for 2017 and 2018, being slaughtered to last place. Slamdunk managed to achieve second place in the Sports Day standings, making that its best Sports Day performance since 2013. The victory of Bullseye in the 2019 Sports Day made the performance of Bullseye its second best performance overall at the time of all Sports Day victories, after the 2016 Sports Day Victory and the 2015 Sports Day Victory.
As of 2025, this is the only Sports Day where every single Bullseye member at the time of the victory; every single batch of Bullseye members, had won a Sports Day upon their graduation in Year 11 and was part of a future Sports Day victory.
The 2019 Sports Day victory of Bullseye is the first of five consecutive victory years for Bullseye. It is the start of the longest Sports Day victory streak of Bullseye and a contributor to the Founder's Run victory streak, which surpassed the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Sports Day victory to become the longest Bullseye victory streak ever as of 2025.
Because the Sports Day 2019 victory of Bullseye achieved all unfinished goals and symbolism in 2017 and 2018, it is billed as the "May 9th version of Nobel", as it takes place in a similar hallmark as the Malaysian general election in 2018.
Background
Bullseye had won the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Sports Days, as well as the 2014 and 2015 Nobel Cup. After a successful two calendar years of winning all sports events; the Nobel Cup and Sports Day, in the same calendar year, the Bullseye members attempted to win a third Nobel Cup victory and fourth Sports Day victory; the 2016 Nobel Cup and 2017 Sports Day. Bullseye unsuccessfully failed to win those two events. While the Bullseye members managed to make up for the Nobel Cup loss in 2016 by winning the 2017 Nobel Cup, the Bullseye members failed to win the 2018 Sports Day, which was still pending after the previous Sports Day victory in 2016.
After a rough 2017 Sports Day which involved numerous conflicts with his friends, Wei Yiang decided to return to Nobel for the effort to wrest the 2018 Sports Day trophy from Touchdown with the Bullseye members, but was met with multiple condemnation from the management team, who feared alumni changing the equation and landscape of Sports Day, which can cause Bullseye to win.
2018 Nobel Cup
In November 2018, Bullseye won the second consecutive Nobel Cup title for the second round, brining a second pair of Nobel Cup victories after the 2014 and 2015 Nobel Cup victories. The victory of Nobel Cup had been planned since June 2018, resulting in a victory for Bullseye.
The Nobel Cup victory of Bullseye resulted in a solid footing for Bullseye to win the Sports Day. Fresh from the 2018 Nobel Cup victory, the Bullseye members were determined to win the Sports Day, as the 2018 Nobel Cup was crucial for the 2019 Sports Day Victory of Bullseye.
Preparations and predictions by Wei Yiang for Nobel Cup 2018
In October 2018, the first set of predictions were listed for the 2018 Nobel Cup and 2019 Sports Day. When the predictions were first presented to Ashwin Jeyabalan, the assistant Bullseye captain, was in disbelief over how to react. According to the predictions, the 2019 Sports Day was predicted to have had been won by Touchdown; the prediction was made on 17th October 2018. Had Touchdown won the 2019 Sports Day, it would have had resulted in a same victory streak; a triple victory just like Bullseye; the Bullseye victories occurred in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and a hypothetical Touchdown victory would have had occurred in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Touchdown, along with its 2013 victory, will have more Sports Day victories than Bullseye, although Bullseye will still have more Nobel Cup victories than any other house. The prediction also predicted that Homerun will win the Founder's Run and Touchdown would also snatch the Nobel Cup back from Bullseye.
In the second prediction, released on 20th October 2018, Wei Yiang predicted that in order for Bullseye to win the 2019 Sports Day, Bullseye will need to win the Nobel Cup, the Founder's Run and a bunch of Sports Day events and Pre Sports Events in order to claim the champion house trophy. These predictions were presented to the Bullseye members for their consideration during the Nobelfest 2019 on 27th October.
After Bullseye's victory in the Nobel Cup, predictions for Sports Day were maintained. According to the predictions list, Wei Yiang made a total of five predictions in December; and the champion house occasionally rotated between Homerun and Touchdown. The prediction was revised to Touchdown winning the Founder's Run.
Some analysts compared Bullseye and Touchdown's rivalry to that of other political systems in liberal democracies; the Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional system in Malaysia at the time; the Democratic and Republican systems in the United States; the Labor and Conservative system in the UK, Canada and Australia, and the pro-Beijing and pro-Democracy coalitions in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China.
Prediction of dates for Sports Day 2019
On 25th December 2018, the list of predicted dates for Sports Day 2019 was revealed. The house meets were predicted for 14th January 2019, 11th February 2019, 19th February 2019, 18th March 2019, 1st April 2019 and 6th April 2019. The purposes of predicting the dates was to prepare a comprehensive framework for Sports Day preparations. Subsequently, the Founder's Run was predicted for 15th February 2019, the Cheer Competition on 22nd February, the Notice Board competition on 1st March 2019, the Sports for All from 25th to 29th February, the Telematch Day on 10th April 2019, the Pre Sports Events from 1st to 15th April 2019, the Sports Day Rehearsal on 15th April and the Sports Day on 18th April 2019.
Formation of an Alumni House Captain for the 2019 Sports Day
On 6th August 2018, Wei Yiang created a Facebook group comprising alumni from Nobel who are from Bullseye. Wei Yiang created a discussion and the Bullseye members in the group elected Jason Leing as the house captain. Jason Leing was doing A Levels in Sunway College, and many of the people in Sunway chose Jason in order to give him a chance from his 2017 setbacks due to suspensions. The main purpose of the Alumni Captain was to give Bullseye the motivation.
The Bullseye members originally proposed Wei Yiang to lead everything, but he denied this due to conflict of interest. As such, Jason was elected and thanked Wei Yiang for sticking to the Pakatan Harapan election principles.
Start of school for the Year 2019
Nobel International School begun its first day of school on Wednesday, 2nd January 2019. Once again, Wei Yiang was there to witness the start of school for 2019 before heading to Sunway College for his FIA classes.
The launch of Sports Day took place on Monday, 7th January 2019, by Mr Narish. During the launch on 7th January, Mr Narish unveiled the theme of the Sports Day, Transformers, and announced the four house meet dates; 14th January, 11th February, 4th March and 11th March. The Founder's Run would take place on 22nd February, with Sports Day occurring exactly a month later, on 22nd March.
The announcement of the dates was compared to the predicted dates, especially the fact that 14th January and 11th February were correctly predicted as the house meets.
Wei Yiang's 2019 Sports Day Banner
For the first time in the banner-making history, Wei Yiang had planned to coordinate a banner design according to the theme of Sports Day, Transformers. The aim of the coordination was to ensure a unified theme command in conjunction with the Sports Day official theme for Bullseye, and to ensure a unified format for the sports house. This will prevent the illusion of a disunited team.
The banner features the words 'Bullseye' in the font of the Transformers TV series' logo, with the captions "Soar High, Soar Bright" in English and Mandarin, to appeal to students from Chinese schools. It also features the Red Autobot from the Transformers series against a backdrop of Kuala Lumpur and a textured red-and-yellow background.
House Meet on 14th January 2019
On 14th January 2019, the first house meet took place at Nobel International School from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. The meeting took place at the Multipurpose Hall in Basement 2 of Nobel International School.
In the meeting, Bullseye members were told to sign up for their respective events. Wei Yiang attended the meeting. He was able to present the Sports Day predictions to Zidez Raja, Lee Kai Yang and Sebastian Kon. The trio were depressed at the results, but were told by Wei Yiang that the results can be changed because Sports Day had not happened yet. The trio agreed.
The proposals were presented to Ashwin Jeyabalan and a few other Bullseye committee members but they only glanced at it for a short while.
Jason Leing's proposal to fuse Chinese New Year with the Sports Day
On 2nd February 2019, Jason Leing proposed that the Chinese New Year theme be fused with the 2019 Sports Day and Bullseye. However, this can't be implemented as the Sports Day takes place a long time after Chinese New Year had long ended.
The proposal was revived and implemented for the 2025 Sports Day.
Founder's Run 2019
The 2019 Founder's Run took place on 22nd February 2019 at Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam. This is the fourth edition of the Founder's Run and the final edition to involve a 10km run. It is also the final edition to involve rankings for Top 10 for the entire school for each race.
During the 2019 Founder's Run, Mr Chan Lik Hoong announced that Nobel was planning to implement an A Levels programme at the school. He also hinted that due to the lack of space, a new building would need to be found to house the A Level programme.
In the 2019 Founder's Run, Lau Wei Yiang became the first person in the Founder's Run to win three consecutive Founder's Run titles. This title was eventually matched with Enid Chow Ming Wai in the 2023 Founder's Run. Wei Yiang suffered a heavy stomach during the run but was able to defend his title and claim a third victory in the race. Meanwhile, in the 5km race, Darryl Keith Tan managed to claim the third consecutive 5km title by an athlete from Bullseye in the race.
Bullseye managed to win the Founder's Run by an even larger margin, making the 2019 Founder's Run the best performance of Bullseye in a Founder's Run to date. Mr Narish subsequently announced that Bullseye had managed to rack up a 76-point lead in the official tally, making it the largest lead in a Sports Day tally for a Sports Day for Bullseye.
Pre Sports Events 2019
The 2019 Pre Sports Events took place from 1st March 2019 to 19th March 2019. The 1500m, 800m, 4X200m and 4X400m took place at Panasonic Stadium on 11th March 2019. The High Jump and Shot Putt took place on 12th March 2019 at Nobel International School. Subsequently, the Sports For All took place from 18th February to 1st March.
On 12th March 2019, it was announced that Bullseye was achieving a 100-point lead in all the overall Sports Day tally. The lead caused protest among Touchdown members, and memes were made by Year 7 Touchdown members to protest the Bullseye lead. In response, Bullseye members made their own memes, with Lau Wei Yiang making a meme of Touchdown's marchers holding a Barisan Nasional flag, which resulted in laughter from the Bullseye members.
Sports Day Rehearsal 2019
The Sports Day Rehearsal took place on Tuesday, 19th March 2019, at the Panasonic Stadium, Shah Alam. The rehearsal was conducted in fair weather. Bullseye managed to win a large number of the events.
Telematch 2019
The Telematch Day was held on Wednesday, 20th March 2019.
The Tug of War took place at the PE field near the school compound, while the Telematch took place at the courtyard and school hall. The Tug of War was won by Touchdown and the Telematch by Slamdunk, thus moving Slamdunk up to second place.
Sports Day 2019
The 2019 Sports Day took place at the Panasonic Stadium, Shah Alam, and lasted from 3:00pm to 6:30pm.
On the 2019 Sports Day, Wei Yiang was asked once again not to hang his banner, which outraged the Bullseye members. The 2019 Sports Day was also the first Sports Day to have a mascot competition, and Ashley Cheah was appointed as the mascot captain. During the opening ceremony, each house did not march with their banner; the banner was brought in from the sides after the marchpast is completed.
The 2019 Sports Day saw Danial Hafiz amazing the school with his awesome records and being crowned the Sports Boy. The final tally saw Touchdown reduced to last place and Bullseye being the champion house. Throughout the entire Sports Day, the Bullseye members kept rallying like a protest rally and Wei Yiang was referred to as being more enthusiastic than even the house captain.
During the champion house run of Bullseye, which took place after Ms Cynthia announced the results at 6:15pm, Ashwin and Chia Zheng ran in opposite directions while holding the trophy; Ashwin was running backwards while Chia Zheng ran forwards. This was then followed by Touchdown and Homerun following Bullseye in running around the stadium.
Ashwin gave a speech following the end of the Sports Day, saying that the victory of Bullseye was possible because of the effort of all the Bullseye members. He was quoted as saying, "Listen, you might think that we have won just because we wrote papers and stuff like that. But the reason we have won is because of you guys. Some of you did not even want to stay back and this trophy is the reason you stayed back to practice. This trophy is the result of your efforts; I hope to see this happening in the years to come."
Alyssa Kok said everyone played a role, and Wei Yiang uttered that Bullseye had become a movement and thanked everyone for allowing him to participate and contribute to the Sports Day efforts for Bullseye. The crowd cheered and the victory speech was attended by Benjamin Lew and Nikhil Thanasan.
Aftermath
Reactions to the 2019 Sports Day Results
The victory of Bullseye was criticized by Ms Lim for Wei Yiang getting involved in the event. Ms Lim told Wei Yiang that "if everyone wanted to win, who wants to lose?" and subsequently told him to "calm down" and not scream and shout. The remarks by Ms Lim were criticized because they were opposing to the sports spirit.
Touchdown's captain, Joshua Lim, gave a concession speech to the Touchdown members following the loss of the 2019 Sports Day admitting his shortcomings in Touchdown's last place result. During a photography session, Ms Bee Yong took a photo with the Touchdown squad.
Post-2019 Sports Day
The 2019 Sports Day precedes the subsequent five year victory streak of Bullseye, reviving the former plans for the proposed four year victory plan, which subsequently evolved into a five year victory project. The Sports Day paved the way for a continued victory in the Founder's Run for Bullseye.
Symbolism
The 2019 Sports Day is widely compared to the 9th May 2018 General Election in Malaysia, as both involve significant contribution and defiance by key individuals from Bullseye and Pakatan Harapan. While Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was credited for ousting Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Lau Wei Yiang was also commended for being the first alumni to influence the scores of Sports Day and aid Bullseye to restore the Bullseye victory. Subsequently, the 2019 Sports Day victory brought a closure to the 2017 Sports Day and 2018 Sports Day loss, and was a landmark deal in Bullseye's continued performance post 2019.
Goals for Sports Day 2019
