Lau Wei Yiang's bids for the House Captain of Bullseye

Lau Wei Yiang, an alumni of Nobel International School, had in recent years, proposed multiple bids and candidacies for him to become the House Captain of Bullseye, both when he was a student of Nobel International School, and also following his graduation from the school after completing his IGCSE exams in 2017. All bids and candidacies proposed by him occurred after the 2017 Sports Day, which was the last Sports Day for his graduating batch, the Class of 2017.
Various reasons and purposes were proposed for the candidacy, such as the loss of Bullseye in recent years, incompetency of existing captains, and the perceived enthusiasm and excitement brought to Bullseye by Lau Wei Yiang, both as a student and as an alumni.
Bidding process
Selection criteria
The post of the House Captain of Bullseye and house committee members are generally open for election to existing students of Nobel International School. Only students from Year 10 and 11 shall participate in the selection process, with the House Captain post only open to Year 11 students. Voting for the House Captain of Bullseye is normally done during a Bullseye National Convention or other house meetings attended by the Bullseye members of the Junior and Senior School.
Any student of Nobel International School is invited to put themselves forward as a candidate for the House Captainship of Bullseye. The names of the candidates shall be submitted to the teachers and the Head of Sports and Physical Education (PE), as well as the Head of Co-Curricular Activities (CCA). Candidates aspiring to become the House Captain of Bullseye would need to present their plans and initiatives to the Bullseye members during a Bullseye National Convention or House Captain Election. Following the presentation by the candidates, Bullseye members shall then select the House Captain using a voting process determined by the school, either by hand raising, voice acclamation or by paper ballots. The winner of the House Captain Election shall be elected as the House Captain of Bullseye, and the runner up shall be confirmed as the Assistant House Captain. The requirements for the House Captainship of Bullseye have changed from year to year.
The information stated in this article applies to the election of the other house committee members and captains of other sports houses.
2017 House Captain election criteria
The election process for the 2017 House Captain of Bullseye was constantly criticized for the quiet selection process of the captains with very little room for communication to the students of Nobel International School, as the selection process was constantly criticized for putting individuals heavily invested in sports. This was the only house captain election to not involve direct nomination by students.
In July 2016, Mr T. Narish Tamilarasan, the then Sports Day and Nobel Cup coordinator of Nobel International School, as well as Head of Student Leadership, unveiled the selection process to the staff of Nobel International School. The Management Team of Nobel International School would consult with Ms Renee Nelson Mathews, the Level Leader for Year 10, to put forward candidates for the election of the House Captain. Each teacher would be consulted, comprising of sports teachers, Mr Victor Kwong, the head of Physical Education (PE), Ms Sylvia, the deputy head of PE, Ms Bee Yong, the Principal of Nobel International School's Junior and Senior School, Mr Neoh Yeow Wen, the head of CCA, as well as feedback from other members of staff.
Four candidates were eventually proposed for election by each house. The candidates were:
For Bullseye: Sean Mark, Chia Yan Ying, Alex Chia and Yeo Eu Lynn
For Touchdown: Lim Wences, Heng Le Anne, Megan Lee and Ellie Lim
For Homerun: Joseph Diong, Marcus Chai, Nieshaal Thambipillay and Isabella Wong
For Slamdunk: Ethan Wong, Brendan Cheah, Seah Xin Yi and Dylan Sean Tan
On 15th August 2016, students went to vote for their new house captains, resulting in Sean Mark and Chia Yan Ying being elected as House Captains of Bullseye. Joseph Diong and Marcus Chai became house captains of Homerun. Slamdunk was represented by Brendan Cheah and Ethan Wong, and Touchdown by Lim Wences and Heng Le Anne.
On 13th February 2017, Chong Vicky became the new assistant house captain of Bullseye after Chia Yan Ying resigned as assistant house captain as she was relocating to the United Kingdom.
2018 to 2021 House Captain Elections
On Friday, 8th September 2017, during the morning assembly, Mr Narish announced the 2018 Bullseye House Captain will be elected on Monday, 11th September 2017. Mr Narish announced that for the 2018 House Captain Election, the nominating draw by the teachers would be cancelled. Instead, students will be allowed to resume nominating themselves but would need to meet certain criteria. Candidates must not have any disciplinary record or disciplinary action, possess positive feedback from house teachers, exercise good behavior and qualify as a Year 11 student in 2018 Academic Year.
This criteria remained in effect for the 2019 House Captain Election, which took place on Monday, 20th August 2018, the 2020 House Captain Election, which occurred on Friday, 30th August 2019, and the 2021 House Captain Election which was held on Friday, 14th August 2020.
For the 2019 House Captain Election, at least three captains must be chosen, with one assistant house captain being of the opposite gender in order to allow for gender equality.
2022 House Captain Election
The 2022 House Captain Election took place on Monday, 14th March 2022, using the same format and criteria as the 2018-2021 elections.
2023 and 2024 House Captain Election
The 2023 House Captain Election, which occurred on Friday, 10th February 2023, utilized the same format and criteria as the 2018-2021 House Captain Election. As part of the selection process, Mr Lew Wei Him, the head of CCA, announced that the House Captain selection process would be expanded to have one official head boy, head girl, and their assistants as the captains, making it a total of four captains in general, to further consolidate gender equality and gender balance. This was also applied to the 2024 House Captain Election on Friday, 20th October 2023.
2025 and 2026 House Captain Election
For the 2025 House Captain Election, the same format as 2022 was reinstated. The election took place on 6th January 2025. This was also applied to the 2026 House Captain Election on 30th January 2026.
Bid developments
Post Sports Day 2017
Following the 2017 Sports Day, Wei Yiang considered exploring a candidacy for the 2018 House Captain Election. He had considered meeting Mr Narish to discuss the candidacy.
Nobel International School House Captain Election procedures dictate that the election of the House Captain candidates will only be considered for candidates meeting the criteria of being a Year 11 student in 2018. As Wei Yiang would no longer be considered a student of Nobel by then, his candidacy came as a surprise to many of his peers from the graduating class of 2017.
According to Ms Lim Mee Wee, the then head of student affairs, any Year 11 student in 2017 aspiring to be the 2018 house captain would be disqualified from election as students graduating in 2017 would no longer be considered part of the school community in 2018.
The purpose of Wei Yiang's 2018 Bullseye House Captain Candidacy was to inspire a victory for 2018 for Bullseye and to achieve the Champion House position for Bullseye in 2018.
As Wei Yiang would no longer be a student in 2018, various proposals have emerged to accommodate the situation. Wei Yiang proposed that he defer his college intake until after the 2018 Sports Day is over, in order to accommodate logistics for the 2018 Sports Day. Wei Yiang also assured no active commitments would be booked until after June 2018 in order to mobilize logistics for Sports Day 2018. Wei Yiang also proposed giving a third house captain position for him and creating the Alumni House Captain position in order to become House Captain of Bullseye.
Post 2023 Sports Day and 2024's 20th Anniversary Sports Day
On 28th June 2024, just before the 20th Anniversary Sports Day, Wei Yiang expressed regret that despite his instrumental contribution to the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 Sports Day victories of Bullseye, he had no chance of becoming house captain. At the time, Bullseye was leading in the 20th Anniversary's Sports Day standings.
Immediately after the 20th Anniversary Sports Day following the loss of Bullseye in that event, Wei Yiang once again launched a bid for the 2025 Bullseye House Captain. According to Wei Yiang, if elected, Wei Yiang proposed creating an Alumni House Captain position just like what he had done in 2018. At the same time, he also proposed the inclusion of alumni into the consultation process for Sports Day.
Wei Yiang also proposed, if elected, he will meet, on a one-to-one basis, every single Bullseye member from Year 7 to 11, to propose the plans and ideas for Bullseye. He also proposed extending the training period for Sports Day and would request the teachers and staff permission if given the opportunity. Wei Yiang assured full commitment as house captain if elected to the post, and that he will observe full execution of the sports strategies, which will be proposed and formulated by the Bullseye members.
Age
If Wei Yiang is successful in his bid and candidacy as the House Captain of Bullseye, he will become the oldest person to be elected as the house captain or assistant captain of any sports house in Nobel International School, surpassing Caleigh Chan Li-Ern, the current oldest record holder and 2026 assistant house captain of Homerun. He would also become the oldest house captain to ever lead Bullseye, surpassing Ong Zi Xin, the 2026 Bullseye House Captain.
The common age for a House Captain in Nobel International School is the age of 16, although some are 17-year-olds. Wei Yiang, however, would be more than eight times the age of the current school record holder, Caleigh Chan Li-Ern, and the current Bullseye captain, Ong Zi Xin. However, Wei Yiang is still biologically younger than five other house captains as of date of birth: Dominic Chow, Brian Ong, Lim Wei Ming, Sabrina Qistina and Sean Mark; Wei Yiang is two months younger than Sean Mark and also from the same graduating batch as Sean Mark.
Should Wei Yiang successfully earn the job scope of House Captain of Bullseye, he will become the first alumni House Captain. The Class of 2017 however, would have two house captains at its point of time, alongside two assistant house captains; the assistant captains were Chia Yan Ying and Chong Vicky, and equalize the number of house captains from the Class of 2023 and 2024.
Legal age
Wei Yiang is currently above the age of 18. This allows him to do many things, such as drive or vote. However, many students in Nobel are aged 17 and below, well below the legal age. Although a small number of students are aged 18 and above, Nobel still treats these students equally just like the rest of the school.
Parents and the teachers might be concerned over the presence of an over 18 year old student in the school, let alone someone who is above 20. The parents would be concerned that an individual over 20 would present a threat to the students, given that individuals over 20 are no longer considered teenagers. Teachers would be concerned over the competition of the students with an adult, making the situation lopsided.
Experience
Wei Yiang would enter the Sports Day as the most experienced house captain, having participated in all Sports Day, Founder's Run and Nobel Cups since his entrance into Nobel in the year 2008. Since the 2013 Sports Day, Wei Yiang would have had overseen ten Junior and Senior School Sports Days, namely the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025 Sports Days; the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 Nobel Cups; and also the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 Founder's Runs.
Compared to Wei Yiang, most students would have about three to four years of experience in either Sports Day, Nobel Cup or Founder's Run before becoming the House Captain of Bullseye. Wei Yiang would have had more than 13 years of experience. Subsequently, Wei Yiang would also become the first non-track and field athlete house captain, having not qualified for a major track event except the 800m and 1500m in 2016 and 2017.
Concerns were raised by pundits who express worry that an experienced house captain with more than a decade of experience would have too much advantage over current students, as more experienced house captains tend to gain the upper hand and make the competition skewed to one house captain. Others see it as an overqualification in a field that tends to have leaders with developing minds rather than established ones; Wei Yiang is a university graduate.

On November 29, 2023, per the recommendation of the Future Host Commission, the IOC Executive Board invited the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to targeted dialogue, with Salt Lake City—Utah named the sole preferred candidate for the 2034 Winter Olympics.[5][6]
During the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on July 24, 2024, Salt Lake City was elected as host of the 2034 Winter Olympics, via a referendum to the 95 IOC delegates.[7]

WADA vs USADA conflict
The IOC insisted that Utah agree that it may "terminate Olympic host city contracts in cases where the supreme authority of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in the fight against doping is not fully respected or if the application of the world antidoping code is hindered or undermined." This was intended to undermine the United States Department of Justice's criminal investigation into the allegations that the World Anti-Doping Agency failed to sanction and covered up drug use by Chinese swimmers.[8][9] The Chinese have accused the western mainstream media, in particular The New York Times, of atrocity propaganda against the Chinese athletes.[10] However, IOC president Thomas Bach has attempted to alleviate concerns that the city could lose its second Olympics if organizers do not fulfill an agreement to play a peacemaker between anti-doping authorities. Bach downplayed the gravity of a termination clause that the IOC inserted into Utah's host contract in July.[11]

On March 13, 2025, the IOC announced that Comcast would become a "strategic partner" of the organization, which will include the renewal of NBCUniversal's long-running broadcast rights to the Olympic Games in the United States through 2036 under an agreement valued at US$3 billion, and see Comcast partner with the IOC on various technological initiatives, including co-developing new digital advertising opportunities, and assisting Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) with in-venue distribution and its Olympic Video Player service.[25][26] NBCU was reportedly additionally motivated, and willing to pay a slightly higher price than its previous contract, by the 2034 Winter Olympics being hosted by the United States.[26]
